"The Snake and Ladder" is based upon a game, which is created inancient India. In which the ladders represent virtues and thesnakes represent vices. Instructions: - After rolling the dice, aplayer can start moving the coin only when he/she get 1 for thefirst time - If the coin reaches the box with a ladder bottom end,then it climbs the ladder and go to box, where the top of theladder ends and continue from there. - If the coin reaches the boxwith the face of the snake, then it comes down to the box, wherethe snake tail ends and continue from there. - The player gets ananother turn to roll the dice, if he/she gets 1, 5, 6. - The winnerof the game is the one who first reaches the last box or step.

Krishnamurthy was born at Puttamangalam near Mayiladuthurai intheold Thanjavur district in an orthodox, large Brahmin familywithlimited means. After primary education in thevillage,Krishnamurthy joined the National High School at Tiruchi,about 100kilometres away. When Mahatma Gandhi launched hisnon-cooperationmovement in 1921, thousands of students gave uptheir studies toparticipate; Krishnamurthy was among them. Inspiredby Gandhi'sspeech at a public meeting in Tiruchi, and despite theSecondarySchool Leaving Certificate examination being just threemonthsaway, he left school and joined the Indian National Congress.In1922, he was given a one-year prison sentence for participatinginthe independence struggle. It was during this periodthatKrishnamurthy came into contact with two people who were toplay amajor role throughout his life: veteran Congress leaderC.Rajagopalachari, and T.Sadasivam, who was to become alife-longfriend and partner in journalistic ventures.Krishnamurthy's firstattempt at writing fiction also came duringthat period. In 1923 hebecame a sub-editor on Navasakthi, a Tamilperiodical edited byTamil scholar and freedom fighter V.Kalyanasundaram, known as"Thiru Vi. Ka". Krishnamurthy's first bookwas published in 1927.Leaving Navasakthi in 1928, Krishnamurthystayed with C.Rajagopalachari at the Gandhi Ashram in Tiruchengodein Salemdistrict and helped him edit Vimochanam, a Tamil journaldevoted topropagating prohibition. In 1931, he was again imprisonedfor sixmonths. Next year Krishnamurthy joined Ananda Vikatan, aweeklyedited and published by S. S. Vasan, as its de facto editor.Themagazine soon became a household name in middle classfamilies.Krishnamurthy's witty, incisive comments on politics,literature,music and other forms of art were looked forward to withunceasinginterest by readers. He wrote under the pen names of"Kalki", "Ra.Ki", "Tamil Theni", "Karnatakam" ,and so on. Vikatanpublished manyof his short stories and novels (as serials). Thename Kalkidenotes the impending tenth Avatar of Lord Vishnu in theHindureligion, who it is said, will bring to an end the Kali Yugaandreinstate Dharma or righteoueness among the worldly beings. Heusedthe name because like the Avatar he wanted to bring aboutgreatchanges, and also in honor of his mentor Kalyana SundaramMudaliar,taking the "Kal" from his name and the "Ki" from his own.He isoften referred to as "Kalki Krishnamurthy" or simply "Kalki".In1941 he left Ananda Vikatan and rejoined the freedom struggleandcourted arrest. On his release after three months he andSadasivamstarted the weekly, Kalki. He was its editor until hisdeath onDecember 5, 1954. In 1956, he was awarded the SahityaAkademi Awardposthumously for his novel Alai Osai.
